Hey, guys,

Looking for some good recommendations on books dealing with the Devil, Old Scratch, Auld Hornie, Cernunnos, whatever you might call him. Preferably from a British standpoint and, failing that, Scandinavian or American. Ideas? Thanks, everyone!

I started reading his A History of Witchcraft recently. Good stuff so far. He's got quite a few books. Any of them in particular?

"The Devil" (antiquity)

"Satan" (early Christianity)

"Lucifer" (Medieval)

"Mephistopheles" (modern)

And the summary of the set is called "Prince of Darkness," in which Russell gives more attention to the idea of evil rather than its symbols and characters. He was at one time a professor at UC Santa Cruz, and Robert Heinlein gives him a few pages of ranting in his "Expanded Universe" lectures on the compromised nature of academic standards.

You could also have a look at this discussion we had last year, although no book titles were in it.
