Every day, like, a bajillion OC accounts are created by spammers. To prevent us from drowning in spam, we've moved to a manual registration approval process.

That leaves the mod team sifting through screen after screen of registrations and determining if they're legitimate or not every day, and a delay in approval for new members. This is time consuming and impractical.

So we're going to be banning the IP ranges used by these jerks. What that means is that if you access the OC from China, Russia, or Ukraine, you might not be able to one day. I'm going to do my best to avoid banning any ranges with legitimate users, but I might miss some.

So if that happens, email voidgazing@gmail.com.

Big mountain, wide river
There's an ancient pull
These tree trunks, these stream beds
Leave our bellies full
They sing out I am going to stand my ground
You rise to me and I'll blow you down
I am going to stand my ground
You rise to me and I'll blow you down

Please do be careful. When I'm at home, I use a tethered iphone through Family Mobile/TMobile. They use a global NAT proxy that fakes origination from their proxy IP. When I'm back at the house, I'll fish around for the IP addresses they use to spoof, although I'm sure they are in my logs somewhere on OC.

I have no control over this, to the point I cannot use the IRC channel (except through webapp) I've also noticed bans on my proxy IP block on 4chan as well. I can tunnel all my traffic through an SSH session to my remote server, but SSH pukes randomly on a cell phone connection.. Kind of up shit's creek on this issue.

I think you'll be fine- the IP addresses I'm showing for you go back to 2009, and they're all US based (I checked about 2/3rds of them). If anything wacky happens, email me (or worst case, use a free proxy to further spoof yourself) and I'll unban the range.

I'm not whacking entire countries, just ranges that show spammers. For example, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx spams, I block the last 3, which should be pretty region specific. I'm trying to err on the side of connection, and mostly it is the same spots responsible for most of the spam registrations- Fujian in China, Moscow in Russia, etc.

What exactly is happening to the flood of new users getting banned from the beginning on? Will you erase them? Is that even possible? Two reasons I am asking for. 1.) Good names might get taken and vanish forever. 2.) A sheer mass of "dead" accounts clouding the real amount of members.

There have always been (and will be) members who are only lurking and reading. Also members taking a hiatus and coming back after some time.
But those spammers? Is it possible to clean that mass up?

Have you already see the "products" they want to sell? I am just asking out of curiousity.

Maybe it is fake cleaning products. Or a better spam detection?

We may erase them at some point but keep ahold of the IPs or whatever other criteria were used. No good names have been taken. They are things like "Dxzabfl3 /" and "dianasmithlke". Filters are available when looking at members to show them by their active state.

Spammers typically register an account and then either post right away, or wait several months. This doesn't affect lurkers, because the way they get banned is they post spam, or their IP address is a known source of forum spam. Some countries are very unlikely to ever register a legitimate account, such as China and the Ukraine, and they are also the sources of 95% of the spam accounts. So there, I ban IP ranges. We've never had (that I can find) a legitimate user from either, and I deciding to take the chance on that one, because I can't keep up with the sheer fuckin number of them. Some legitimate users have to wait a day before I even see their accounts in the vast amount of spam accounts. If I can reduce the number of spam signups, i can get to them faster.

The products are usually the usual: penis enlargement, Hot Asian Girls, Cheap Pharmaceuticals. Once in awhile we'll get someone who is actually into the occult, and wants a membership so they can promote their site. When that happens, they get through the "are you a spammer" validation checks, and then immediately post spam because of course they can't be bothered to read the rules and find out that we have a 'classifieds' section.
