Amethyst is essentially quartz, silicon dioxide, with other elements - principally iron - in the mix. The whole crystalline mineral specimen is amethyst. The opaque rock in which it grows as a geode is called its matrix. While only counted as semiprecious among gemstones, the rich purple color has made it extremely popular in jewelry from antiquity. It is the stone traditionally set in a bishop's ring of office. The ancient Greeks believed it could prevent drunkenness, which is the origin of its name.
Amethyst is likewise popular amongst practioners of crystal therapy and other essentially magical use of stones. Purple is held to be a color of high vibrational energy, and thus amethyst is used by some to attune to higher, transpersonal or spiritual aspects of consciousness. In this practice, it is generally associated with the seventh circuit of Timothy Leary's eight circuit model of consciousness. It is thus more suitable for spiritual, emotional or mental healing than physical - a tradition which blends in to its ancient reputation as an amulet against intoxication.
Gemstones of all kinds are held to be good recipients, resevoirs and conduits of magical forces, largely because we find them fascinating. How you should charge your stone depends upon how you intend to use it, and what forces you wish it to retain. To draw upon its transpersonal or spiritual energies to encourage empathy or psychic openness, I would expose it to starlight overnight for a few days, with the Moon in Capricorn and moving into Aquarius, to represent subtle forces (light of the moon and stars rather than of the sun) transcending the materialistic nature of ego-self (Capricorn) to reach for the higher innovative, societal and humanist qualities of Aquarius.
Sleeping with a stone thus charged would help with realizing the spiritual or evolutionary lesson (Aquarius) we can learn from our mundane frustrations and challenges (Capricorn). It would also stimulate creative thinking and innovative approaches that "think outside the box" of conventional schemes of organization and classification. Over time, the stone's energy may come to feel heavy or sluggish. What I was taught as a way to clear the murk was to lay the crystal on a bed of salt in sunlight for a few days. One can then charge it anew with the energy one wishes it to contain.
