Have you ever filled out a survey and had to check the little box that says "other"? Have you ever been asked a multiple choice question about your lifestyle and realized that none of the answers fit you? Even, have you ever looked at the signs on public restrooms and not been sure which one you were supposed to use? Maybe you realized that none of the relationship status options on Facebook are right for you.

If any of this, or any of a million similar incidents, sounds familiar to you... Then congratulations, you are one of "The Others".

There are people in this world who don't fit in the little boxes. In fact, everyone is "Other", but most people don't know it or don't want to admit it. Some us know we are Others. Multiples, the transgender, gays, pagans; the people who can't avoid the fact that we're different. Some of us have never thought of it but know it is true. Claim it and make it your own.

We are the people who aren't like everyone else, we don't fit. We are unusual, weird, freaks. That's something to be proud of, something to celebrate. Don't be categorized, be you.

Some people want to silence the Others, never realizing they are also Other themselves. The racist who doesn't know his great grandfather came from a mixed marriage, the homophobe who reacts violently to his attraction to gay men, the man who's religious zealotry covers his spiritual crisis. I pity these people who do not know how magical and unique they are.

If any of this rings true, then I challenge you, from now on any time you see a bunch of little check boxes and an option that says "other please explain"; pick other, and explain that you refuse to be categorized in whatever way is most appropriate to the survey and tell the world why you're unique.

We are The Others, we are everyone, and we will not be silenced.

May you find what you seek,
Alice
