The OC may be up and down over the next several weeks as we tweak and turn things into something new. Change is good right?

Sorry for the trouble... and trust me, there will be trouble, lol. But I do promise we will try to keep it to a minimum, though through all of this the site may be up & down, lag, or show horrible errors. Please bear with us.

Thanks,
Q

P.S. There may also be some data loss, but we will try to keep that from happening at all. So till this is over, if you can, please paste your posts into notepad or something. (data loss should be less then 24 hours)

Is this the reason I cannot log out? I try to log out and get "bad gateway"....although I thought it said "bad getaway"....both seem to be correct. :o

Can't wait to see the new forum, Q! No, really, I can't wait. I'm not very patient.

Do you have an estimated date as to when everything will be fully upgraded?

It was mentioned in another post that they were not entirely sure and it could be months until everything is well enough to do the transfer. I am sure it will be amazing when it is executed. I have enjoyed the last 2? upgrades.

Mainly a backend change to the forum platform itself. We will be switching from vBulletin 4.x to Invision Power Services (full suite).

A few examples of what IPS looks like...

Skype - http://forums.skype.com/
Vodafone - http://forum.vodafon...dex.php?act=idx
O'Reilly - http://forums.oreilly.com/
nVidia - http://forums.nvidia.com/

American Idol Forums - http://idolforums.com/
Neowin - http://www.neowin.net/forum/
Second Shiftrers - http://www.secondshifters.com/forums/

So the changes will be major in most cases.... only the data will remain constant :D

I really like the second shifters main skin. Very grunge in style. Over all it looks like we will have some nice features.

That is the app for Proboards, we'll be on Invision Power... which there is an iphone app for as well, and it will be installed :P

I will look at the tapatalk plugin as well, as it does seem to be ported... but I can not make promises on that one, as this time around I plan on trying to stay as official as possible.

If you don't mind me asking, how much does a forum upgrade cost? And also I am thinking that the cost may not be the biggest issue. Is there difficulty to be expected in upgrading and implementing new forum software? And possibly very time consuming?

I know there could be any number of reasons why a forum upgrade is not being done when it's needed, including personal life issues, et cetera.

P.S. In the back of my mind I can't help but wonder if what one member did in the blog section could be messing the forum up in some ways. Broken blog counters, and I'm even not sure that the counters that are working are doing so properly. Of course I do know that some counters function differently by nature.

Anyway what I was getting at is that member in the blog. Many of their posts contain hundreds of pages of data that resemble some sort of abstract code listing, although some might call it gibberish. And I remember some decades ago there was this hack called "buffer overflow" that people were doing, anyway the results of this were never good and of course this is most likely what is not happening here, but reminiscent nonetheless. Which is to say that maybe it's not the forum software that is obsolete, but that some users are being allowed to screw it up, but not necessarily...just sayin'

A couple hundreds USD, there abouts.

It's time consuming and problems can arise. This forum needs updating now, and the technical issues are the biggest hurdle.

Well I know for at least the past year now I have had the mindset where I'm liable at any given time to cease participating in these occult forums and replace it with some other activity, or invest more time in what I'm already involved with. There is always work to be done around the house here so idle time isn't a problem.

Now having said that it's a year later and I'm still here so it could be another year or longer, and I would just ignore the precariousness of my situation and invest in my 'hobby' if desired. Even given the possible ephemeral reality of it from this point forward.

It was said that technical issues are the biggest hurdle, but as far as the monetary aspect I would be willing to contribute one hundred USD if needed as part of a decision to move forward - I've wasted more than that for a night out on many occasions with absolutely nothing to show for it but a hangover the next day. I don't use pay pal but I could do a check(easier) or money order anytime.

And as for the technical aspect of it I honestly haven't been doing anything related for nearly a couple decades but prior I did work for a local ISP and did some server programming in Visual C++(mostly MFC); web based scripting : JavaScript; VBScript; ASP, and of course the familiar HTML. But yeah it's been a while and I can't say it was one of the more enjoyable things I've ever done.

Thank you. That is very generous of you.

I would also very much like to upgrade the forum with new software. Part of the issue deals with the owner's health. She has had serious and life threatening health problems for a few years and only very recently seems to be recovering. There has been so much on her and her husband's plate that we didn't want to add to their stress in any way. If her health continues to improve within the next month or two, I may speak to her and Qryz about upgrading the software.

Well I figure the occult is something I've never seemed to be able to walk away from completely, not that I've tried. Perhaps this is partly some sort of perpetual lingering of habit. So I just go with the flow and leave everything open without any black and white decision making - and lo and behold I am still here.

So yeah I don't mind chippin' in, and when this place is functioning properly I believe it is the best occult forum on the net with the blog section and all plus the way it looks. It's very aestheticall appealing, and easy on the eyes.

So best wishes and hopefully everything turns out okay. I know there can be a plethora of scenarios where the owners of a forum may be prevented from performing important administrative functions, and perhaps a contingency plan is a good idea, but also something that might best be formulated during less troublesome times.

Take care.

The forum software is super duper obsolete. Support ended, bugs remain.

I can't physically do an upgrade because I don't have the access (it never worked and we sort of stopped trying because the timesink was going to be nuts) but that was the contingency plan after the last upgrade.

We should revisit that with preferably more than one person, if we do manage to save the place.
This is a postcard sent from the dining room of the HMS Russel's Teapot. Wish you were here- the band is spot on tonight, and we're having "all the way down" turtle soup!

I understand, pretty much a reiteration of what Mr. Laughlin said initially, and I don't have any experience with forum software, specifically.

Anyway I'm subjected to some time constraints here as well, but if anyone feels I may be of any help in the event something actually does begin to transpire, aside what I've already offered. Then feel free to contact me.
