I'm not really a big fan of Marduk (or Brahma, Atman, Ahura Mazda, Aten, Ja, Jehovah, El the Sheriffim etc.) and sympathize with the Ancient Ones, are there any actual Mesopotamian alternatives to Marduk and his 50 serfs that I may find redeeming?

Of the 50 names, I only really like Agaku. The "Urilia text" of the Simonomicon was rather limited, as well as being largely concocted (which isn't always a bad thing). Ideas anyone? THX!

I am not sure what you are asking...

Tiamat is a WONDERFUL patron diety, and Ereshkigal is a loving (if not strict) mother figure. I've not worked with many of the male dieties that much so am not sure how much I can help there...

...but what of Enki? He is pretty neutral as far as sides go, but is still pretty much on the side you are straying from...

I guess, what are you seeking? Why are you asking? If you can give me more information, I may be able to help ya bit more.

Simply put, I'm looking for Marduk's competition. (Or at least something totally seperate.) Hopefully primordial and lawless, but not necessarily nice or mean and certainly not just one name.

Tiamat is a wonderful matron, except she is a casualty of war. I looked up the 'Igigi' as well and they are basically just another word for the Anunaki. The problem with the Anunaki is that they all seem to be on Marduk's side, giving the appearance of a conspiracy.

I know (insert Mesopotamian culture and time period) had other elements than the Anunaki, like Lilitu and Puzuzu, but there has to be a classification or even a place that is independent from Marduk and his associates.

Well the wiki link said Enlil was his competion. And Kingu sounds like a possiblity. Have you considered Gilgamesh or Nimrod? Though neither were technically gods, their names are more well known these days than their gods so they should have substantial power.

Shamiyah.

Along The Path of our lives we may believe we have choices. It is only at the end of The Path, looking back, may we then realize, that of our choices, we had none. And know then, that Everything was Fate.

Not Gilgamesh, Nimrod IDK maybe, Kingu YES but I think Kingu was slain as well.

Anyway I'll look into it soon, there must be a group that is opposed to Marduk, one that includes Kingu and Puzuzu and Tiamat Etc.

Yes Kingu was slain. If you are a pagan who believes in the Sumerian myths then you believe that you are made of Kingu's blood when he was killed. As a matter of fact in the Simon Necronomicon that is one of the reasons why humans can summon the ancient one's since humans are made in their blood eg Kingu. This is part of the covenant if I remember correctly.

While it is commendable that you sympathize with conquered forces, and unconventional worship there is a reason why the forces that oppose Marduk were defeated in their cosmic battle, and it isn't necessarily because of some good vs evil concept.

I suggest reading some of Kramer's works on Sumerian mythology.

Correct!
Notes on the Covenant

And as far as the Simon Nec goes, Kingu & Tiamat redefine the 'not dead but dreaming' as seriously how does one go about slaying a god? Tiamat is in more ways then on "mother earth" and is very much alive and well! As far as Kingu goes, I've not worked with him, however, his blood certainly does flow through my veins!

Any of the ancient texts are worthy of reading, as if one only goes by the Simon Nec, then they are seriously misinformed!

The truth today lies someplace in the middle...

I'm sorry for necroposting, so admins: Feel free to delete.

As for alternatives to Marduk: What about Ningirsu/Ninurta, Zababa, Asarluhi or Shara?
I tend to ramble...

We have no problem with necroposting and prefer it to re-hashes :)
This is a postcard sent from the dining room of the HMS Russel's Teapot. Wish you were here- the band is spot on tonight, and we're having "all the way down" turtle soup!
